Surprise Royal Visit

Surprise Royal Visit

G2073  On the 8th March 1951 Her Majesty the Queen and Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret paid a surprise 50 minute lunch-hour visit to The Bristol Aeroplane Company Limited to inspect the Brabazon in the Assembly Hall. The photograph shows from left to right Mr Brian Davidson, Director, Mr A E Russell Chief Designer, and to the right of Her Majesty the Queen Mr P J Chard Production Manager on the Brabazon Project. Just visible behind him is Princess Margaret and senior executives. After signing the visitor's book in Filton House the royal visitors toured the Assembly hall where they saw Brabazon 1 and Mark II under construction, and inspected the Brabazon 1. The royal visitors left at 12.45. In the Spring version of the Bristol Review 1951 Vol 11 no.2, it explained how Mr F M Owner showed them perspex working models of the Proteus and Coupled Proteus which had been set up near the aircraft. The article also explains how 'Both Her Majesty and Princess Margaret showed great interest in everything they saw. The queen wouldn't be put off-she insisted on going into the wing and behind the engines'.
