Airfield Shelters

Airfield Shelters

Go back to the records from the 2003 map.

G1826. Taken during March 1996, the remains of the air raid shelters running alongside the A38 at the eastern end of the Filton runway. They are a stark reminder that only half a century earlier they had been used in earnest. One elderly visitor to Rolls-Royce heritage Trust remembers with sadness as a 16 year old apprentice sitting in the doorway of one. When the bombing began he was reading his book, this was a regular occurrence and not thought much of, a few minutes later he was being lifted clear by rescuers, the miraculous and lone survivor from some 25 people sheltering there.
