Aerial View of East Works: Patchway

Go back to the records from the 1955 map.

G2048. On the lower left hand side is the Mechanical Research Development Department, under construction, during the late 1940's and early 1950's, Just the metal skeleton is visible. This would be used for working on projects such as Brabazon, and Britannia, as on the 28th July 1949 British Overseas Aircraft Company signed a formal contract for 25 Britannia Type 175 aircraft with Proteus engines, but operating initially with Centaurus engines. Across the car park on the right are the Shadow test beds, where lessons learned from the Brabazon meant that the the company had an unequalled level of data which to utilise and expand on for the Type 175. Behind the new building under construction is the test beds for the Centaurus and Hercules engines.
