Gordon England

Gordon England

Back to the story

G1487. A Gordon England biplane from 1912. This is a G.E. 2 fitted with a Gnome engine. The only other G.E. 2 was fitted with a watercooled Daimler/Mercedes engine. On one occasion Gordon England had been flying this aircraft and due to its remarkable stability needed very little control movement to keep it straight. When coming into land however, he found he had little to no elevator movement. After a hair raising land by cutting the engine to reduce speed and height he found that the elevator wires were tied together following and inspection and he, himself had failed to check full and free movement prior to take off.
